Serving as a board member is an incredible opportunity to lead within the nonprofit sector and put your passion for a charitable cause into practice. Along with an affinity for the mission, effective board members must possess a clear understanding of roles and responsibilities to keep your organization on track.

There are four primary basics for being an effective board member. 

Learning

 Establish goals for successfully onboarding yourself to the organization.

Commitment

Identify ways you will show up as a doer, door opener and donor.

Fiduciary

Understand how you carry out the Duty of Care, Duty of Obedience and Duty of Loyalty as an effective board member.

Governance

Rate how well you are managing organizational health and consider remedies for ailing boards.
